Why Do We Count?

Some of our preschool children are in the stage of learning to count and others are solidifying their early counting skills. Both are normal at this age, but these stages do have one important thing in common—they need to understand why we count. It’s not something we, as adults, often think about. All too often, though, children are counting because they are told to and not because they understand its purpose.

In this 30-minute workshop, we’ll talk about counting with a purpose as well as helping children learn to count accurately and fluently.

Below the video, you’ll find links to the handout and templates discussed in the workshop.

Our October workshop will focus on extending these counting skills to develop the number sense and reasoning skills that are the foundation of addition and subtraction fluency.

Every workshop is included in membership in the Preschool Math Companion. In addition to access to each month’s workshop, members also get:

  • Weekly emails with exclusive activity and conversation ideas.

  • Access to the digital library which explains all of the math topics learned in kindergarten math.

  • Monthly live Q&A sessions after the workshops.
