Number Splash

I came across this great idea from Coffee Cups and Crayons and knew I had to give it a try! The original version supports number recognition and I added in a layer of counting practice too!

The Setup:

  1. Write the numbers you want your child to count (if your child is learning to write numbers, this is a great thing to let them do)

  2. Get an object they can use to build sets of that number, such as cubes, counting bears, or blocks

  3. Make water balloons

  1. Pick a number

  2. Count out a set that equals that number

  3. Splash the number with a water balloon

The Math:

  • Skill: Creating a set equal to a given number. Counting out a set equal to a given number is a slightly different skill than counting a set that already exists. Young children often have opportunities to practice counting a given set (such as counting how many orange slices are on their plate), but they don’t create a set (such as counting out five orange slices from a larger group of oranges) as often.
