Simple Activities to Build Early Math Skills at Home
Number Splash
Number Splash is a great way to make counting practice fun! Counting out a given number is a slightly different skill than counting a set that already exists.
Color & Capacity
We love this water activity because it’s 5 minutes of BIG learning and then an hour (at least) of independent exploring and playing.
Graph & Snack
Is there anything our children love more than snack time? Incorporating math into high-interest times of the day is a great way to make it fun for your child.
Pattern Practice
Pattern Practice is one of my favorites because there are ways to make it work from ages 1-5. This makes it a great activity to do with a group of children of different ages. Check out ways to day patterns at each age level.
Shake, Shake, Build
Shake, Shake, Build is a game to reinforce understanding of the counting principles. You only need two materials: a set of dice and an object to build a tower (such as Unifix cubes or any kind of block). We also love this game because it can be set up and played in 5 minutes, which makes it perfect for squeezing into a full day.
Number Puzzles
Number puzzles are easy to make and a fun way to help your child learn to count to higher and higher numbers.
